Position: Early Childhood Paraprofessional

Location: Charter Oak International Academy

Minimum qualification is a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential. Associate s degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or 30 ECE credits + 2 years experience is preferred. Familiarity with School-Readiness, CT PAF/PCF, CT ELDS, and NAEYC-accreditation standards is preferred. Must currently hold or be willing to pursue CPR/First Aid certification. We seek qualified early childhood paraprofessional staff for our school-based public PreKindergarten classrooms serving children age 3 to 4 years of age. Paraprofessional staff will work collaboratively with the classroom teacher, other school staff and administration to provide a supportive, safe, and nurturing environment. Under the direction of a certified classroom teacher, early childhood supervisor, and principal, the early childhood paraprofessional will build positive relationships with school staff and each individual child and foster social-emotional, physical, creative expression, and cognitive development through hands-on, engaging learning experiences aligned with CT Early Learning and Development Standards.
West Hartford Public School PreKindergarten programs are National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accredited. Familiarity with School-Readiness, CT PAF/PCF, CT Early Learning and Development Standards (ELDS), and NAEYC accreditation standards is preferred. Salary/benefits are commensurate with West Hartford Paraprofessional union contract
Essential duties and responsibilities include: but are not limited to:
Instructional Support
  • Implement lesson activities, reinforce lessons, and tutor individual students using lessons developed by teachers in a variety of settings (classrooms, school building/grounds, field trips)
  • Assist in individual and small group instruction, modeling programs to meet the needs of individual students
  • Administer formal and informal assessment instruments and keep appropriate records
  • Implement behavioral management strategies aligned with those utilized by classroom teacher
  • Assist teachers with crisis problems and discipline
  • Support teacher and student use of technology resources (e.g. Smartboard, computer tablets, assistive technology)

  • Clerical
  • Assist with classroom set-up and preparation of instructional materials
  • Observe and document data on student performance and behavior
  • Use of copy machines and other equipment to prepare materials and resources.
  • Perform related clerical duties as assigned.

  • Communication
  • Demonstrates an ability to effectively communicate with and maintain a positive relationship with students and staff
  • Works as part of the team in providing services to students
  • Communicates concerns and issues to the teacher and/or administration as warranted
  • Maintains the same level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information as is expected of fully certified teachers

  • Non-instructional Support
  • Knowledge of health issues of students, being aware of safety concerns and precautions specific to students, how to respond to and monitor seizure activity as appropriate, following school rules and communicating with school nurse.
  • Knowledge of school fire drill and lock down procedures.
  • Monitors students in non-academic settings such as cafeteria, recess, study hall and provides support for transitions to and from bus
  • Escort students to/from other areas within the school environment
  • Monitor and support student participation in art, PE, music, library/computers as well as transitions throughout the facility.
  • Prepare bulletin boards
  • Assist professionals with the development/preparation of learning materials/instructional resources and the environment
  • Provides assistance with individualized program materials
  • Assist students with personal and hygiene care, including activities of daily such as eating, dressing, toileting
  • Physical demands of the position include the ability to lift up to 40 lbs
  • Assist in cleaning and disinfecting toys, furniture, equipment necessary per NAEYC guidelines
